BOISE, Idaho — After a year of avoiding the Ada County Courthouse in a defamation case brought against him, far-right activist Ammon Bundy appeared for a hearing Tuesday morning.

Australians will vote on Oct. 14 in a referendum that would enshrine in the nation’s constitution a mechanism for Indigenous people to advise Parliament on policies that effect their lives known as the Voice. Proponents say embedding the Voice in the constitution would recognize the special place that Indigenous people have in Australian history while giving them input in government policies. Opponents argue it would be the biggest change to Australia’s democracy in the nation’s history and divide Australians along racial lines without reducing Indigenous disadvantage. Here are some questions and answers about key issues behind the referendum:

DETROIT — A 17-year-old from Maryland faces criminal charges in his home state after allegedly making threats to shoot up Oxford High School in Michigan, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

LANSING, Mich. — A lawsuit that alleges Michigan's new legislative district lines unfairly discriminate against Black voters and candidates will go to trial in federal court under a court order issued Tuesday.

Australians will vote on Oct. 14 on a proposed law to create a so-called Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the nation’s first referendum in a generation. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday announced the referendum date, triggering six weeks of intensifying campaigning by both sides of the argument. The referendum would enshrine in the constitution an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, a collection of advocates aimed at giving the nation’s most disadvantaged ethnic minority more say on government policy. Australia has not held a referendum since 1999 and a referendum has not passed since 1977.No referendum has ever passed without bipartisan support and the major parties remain divided over the Voice.
